What is Self-Care?
Self-care is exactly what it says! It’s taking care of one’s self. We are part of a society that relies heavily on the “quick fix” for our health issues. We are bombarded by commercials promoting the latest and greatest pills to solve all of life’s problems. However, if you listen closely, all of these “quick fix” solutions have side effects. Some of them, serious to even fatal.
Self-care is about taking matters into your own hands, being responsible for your own health. And making small adjustments with only positive side effects.
Whether you take action in one or more of the areas below, you will feel the benefits without experiencing the negative side effects.
The S-E-L-F C-A-R-E acronym below is a great guide to help make those small steps with “positive” side-effects. You’ll see that a number of these solutions can be reached via other pages as well; just like you’ll find in life that there are a number of trails to reach the summit of a mountain. Some take longer, others are steeper with more elevation gains, but if you continue to follow the marked trail you will end up with an incredible view (and a feeling of accomplishment!)
Sleep – The quality of your sleep determines your next day.
Energy – Regardless of your age, you should have ample energy throughout your day.
Light – Humans and animals need light to survive. We are affected by the light that surrounds us on a daily basis.
Food – You are what you eat. If you put regular gasoline in your sports car don’t expect high performance results!
Clean Air – The quality of our air is most often more toxic inside our homes than outside. Are you concerned about the air you’re breathing?
Alkaline Water – Our bodies are over 70% water. The quality and quantity we ingest and bathe in daily does have a huge impact on our overall health.
Recovery and performance – Athletes and non-athletes alike, everyone likes to perform at their best. Top performers also invest in their recovery.
Enterprising Spirit – Zig Ziglar said “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.” Most people are focused on their finances at the expense of other things in their life, their mind, body, family, and helping society. If there was a way to create additional income by being of service to others, would that be of interest to you?”
Additional support
Three household items we always have available are DUCK tape, Gorilla Glue and WD-40. WD-40 comes in handy when we need to get the car door to swing more smoothly, Gorilla Glue for those items that are critical for staying together and DUCK tape….well..it’s good for everything — big and small projects!
As it relates to Self Care click the images below if it’s something you need:
DUCK Tape = DUK Tape
Gorilla Glue = Bone Health Pack
WD-40 = Powerbands & Joint Supplement
Our DUK tape is good for all types of challenges you might have – from a stiff joint or sore, strained back to recovery & support during physical activity.
Our Skeleton supports us and protects all of our vital organs. When it breaks down prematurely, the traditional options aren’t straightforward or easy to implement. The Philosophy that changed everything
In 1996 I was introduced to an idea of creating balance in the following five areas:
Mind Body Family Society Finances
Not only for myself but empowering others as well. I realized this was a much different philosophy than the corporate world! My husband Jeff and I came up with the business name Balanced Wellness to incorporate this concept.
Does your life have balance?
Most people focus all of their time and energy working to earn money. And it’s usually at the expense of those other four areas. They may be very stressed and aren’t spending any quality time with their family. They are not sleeping well. They certainly don’t have a lot of excess time to give back to society.
Here’s something I found many years ago and had posted at my desk:
Are you where you thought you would be at this point in your life?
Do you feel that if you continue to do what you are doing, that you will get there in 3-5 years? Or will you be downsized before you are ready to leave?
Will these 3-5 years be at the expense to your health? Quality time with your family? Limiting your time to give back to Society?
